Hot Recycling Tips
Here are some hot recycling tips for making things from recycled items purchased from Trash Palace. Feel free to call and ask if we have what you want in stock. Keep checking this page for the latest hot tips.
Great planters can be made from many things - the inner bowl of an old washing machine, twin concrete tubs, an old wok, work boots, old tea pot, an old toilet, bath or even an old round BBQ.
Rag rugs – made from old clothes, sheets and other old fabric, the right colours can make some really nice mats. Cut into strips of around 10cm. Sew all the strips together to make 3 long 10cm wide strips. Plait your 3 strips together and then form a coil/tightly wound spiral and sew together with hand stitching. Great bathroom mats!
Awesome garden or pond ornaments can be made from old boule’s or bowling balls, they can be decorated with marbles, pebbles or broken crockery using ‘no nails’ to glue decorations on.
Mosaics - old broken crockery and tiles can be used in mosaics for nearly everything, from outdoor tables, bird baths, pavers and floors to jazzing up old plant pots. The mosaic outdoor table (pictured left ) was made from a recycled table purchased from Trash palace, old tiles and broken crockery.
Papier Mache can be made by blending soaked paper as for hand made paper. Place mix into an old pillow slip and squeeze out the excess water. Add wall paper glue and a little PVA until you get the right consistency. This mix is very mouldable and is similar to a clay feel. Pictured right are animals made from papier mache.
Old tin cans can be made into dolls house furniture or even a pincushion (pictured). The back, sides and legs of the ‘pin cushion chair’ are made from cutting the can into strips and spray-painting it gold. Curl and bend the wire into shapes and curls with a thin nosed pair of pliers.
Make your own Buttons. Use bits of plastic from our free plastics bin. Use them on your own funky clothing or jewellery. Simply cut your circle out with a strong pair of scissors. For the button holes, punch a hole through with a nail and hammer, with a piece of wood beneath your button.
