Permaculture Garden
‘Permaculture’ means working in harmony with nature to live more sustainably.
** Trash's permaculture garden is currently dormant. If you or your group would like to be involved with the re-development please email sales@trashpalace.co.nz **
Originally, this garden was created by Permaculture NZ working with Mana Community Enterprises Inc, Porirua City Council
and the Global Volunteer Network NZ to build a permaculture garden at Trash Palace that mimics natural patterns and uses
recycled materials:

- Recycled garden furniture and chimes made from metal scraps
- Sandpits made out of old tractor tyres
- Recycled art
- The path is made of sawdust, cement and ceramics
- Old tyres act as a safety barrier and also heat the soil to aid plant growth
- A husk carpet underlay acts as a weed suppressant

The garden was created using a ‘no-dig’ gardening procedure and the garden border is made of adobe (a clay/cement mix). Plants were selected for their biodiversity, scent and many act as companion plants. Worm composting is also in operation.
Stormwater runoff from Trash Palace is piped down to two ‘water recycling’ ponds that help clean the water. These ponds were formed by compacting cow manure, grass and clay. They contain reeds and pond plants that assist with cleansing, and the second pond has gravel and hay bales in it that act as water filters.
