0800 Helpline for Home Energy Advice Centre

Saint Patrick's Day was particularly green this year with the launch of a new 0800 phone line providing free, impartial, expert advice for people in the Wellington region wanting to discuss their home energy needs.  The Wellington region has been chosen to pilot the helpline which will be jointly funded by the Ministry for the Environment and Wellington City Council.

The Newtown-based Sustainability Trust has been chosen to set up the pilot service, which was operational from Monday 17 March, weekdays 10am-4pm.

It is envisaged that this service will be complementary to the services provided by the Eco Design advisors at Wellington City Council and Kapiti Coast District Council. Eco Design advisors already offer help to people planning new buildings or renovations where energy saving design features can be considered, and can also offer advice on water management, material waste and other issues not always directly related to energy use.

The new helpline will be more focused on helping people in existing households save money on energy bills and get more value for their energy dollars.  Sustainability Trust Energy Advisor Sarah Free explains, "It is hoped that by making use of this helpline, people can identify ways to improve their living standards while saving money on energy costs. People may be considering putting in insulation, new heating, or looking to upgrade appliances with more modern, energy efficient alternatives. We are here to discuss each household's individual requirements and to help work out the best solutions. With the Government's new subsidized loan scheme even some high income households may be entitled to financial assistance for installing energy saving measures such as insulation. Our advice is completely impartial, and we do not promote any particular products or brands. We provide information and then let people decide for themselves what will best suit them."

Sarah also points out that saving energy is good for the environment too, lowering CO2 emissions and reducing the need for electricity network capacity upgrades in the future.

The new phone number is 0800 388 588. The service is free to residents of Wellington City, the Hutt Valley and the Kapiti Coast up to Waikanae.

Those interested can also visit the website www.energyadvice.org.nz, or email an energy advisor at energyadvice@sustaintrust.org.nz.
