Trash Palace Recycling Education Programme
The Trash Palace Education Centre has developed a recycling education programme for schools and children.
The teaching focuses on the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and the three key concepts of environmental education: sustainability, personal and social responsibility and interdependence.
A typical day schedule involves:
- A short trip up to the landfill face
- A guided tour of Trash Palace
- Recycling discussion periods
- A choice of activity:
- Recycled art using old polystyrene packaging
- Recycling flow diagrams illustrating one of the recycling processes they have seen on their tour
- Water quality monitoring of nearby Mitchell Stream
- The healthy plant life cycle, a group puzzle activity
- A follow up visit to your school from the environmental educator provides you with ongoing support and ideas for further environmental education, and helps us to assess our programme’s quality in affecting thinking and behaviour towards more sustainable living.
Limited funded places in the Education Programme are available to Porirua schools. The funding includes teaching and supporting resources on the day of the visit, and a transport subsidy of up to $150. Our environmental educator may also be available to visit your school to talk about recycling, energy or any other aspect of sustainable living. The Programme is available to schools outside the Porirua area but fees will apply.
The Trash Palace Education Centre also has plenty of information and resources for further environmental education, including the Enviroschools Programme and the ‘Take Action’ Programme for Water.

The recycling education programme is generously supported by Porirua City Council.
